Google spends a lot of money in R&D. In 2006 alone, they spent a staggering $1.2 billion on R&D.

But just as Google came from nowhere (two students in their school dorm) to beat Yahoo!, so does the risk lie for somebody to come from behind and upstage Google.

Is this threat real?

UK Phd student John Gekas has been working hard at doing just that.

He wants to be the new search king.

His new search engine is located here and promises to do a lot more than just return superficial results when you are looking for, let’s say posts
on the popular tech blog, hipFOX.com

Designed for the geek community, Hypersearch is an extremely intelligent search engine that does exactly want you want it to do.

I say “geek community” because your regular john doe just wants the results. He doesn’t want to figure out how to use a search engine (especially when he can just go to any search engine and type in what he’s looking for in one box).

For example if you want to find out how many instances your company or your favorite website has mentioned a particular topic or person, you can specify exactly what you want in the option fields that follow the search term query box.

The results are amazingly concise.

Being that this is still a work in progress, it is very exciting to consider the possibilities when Mr. Gekas goes public.
